Hugo Quiroz-Mercado, MD

A Mexican by birth, Dr. Quiroz-Mercado grew up and received his education in Mexico at Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM) College and College of Medicine at the same University (UNAM). After surgical internship he practiced and taught microvascular surgery at Experimental Surgery Laboratory of the Instituto Nacional de Nutricion in Mexico. Quiroz-Mercado pursued residency training in ophthalmology at the Hospital Asociacion para Evitar la Ceguera en Mexico  (APEC) and subspecialty training in retina and vitreous at the same Hospital. He performed a retina fellowship at Eye Research Institute and Retina Associates, Boston Massachusetts. In 1989, upon completion of his training, he became director of the Retina Service at the Hospital APEC. He is founder and chief of Experimental Surgery Laboratory at Hospital APEC. He currently holds the rank of professor at UNAM. He is former Coordinator of Ophthalmology at Hospital Medica Sur Mexico City. His research interest have focused on clinical research on retina, new techniques for vitrectomy and pharmacologic vitreous liquefaction.

He has been member of ARVO, AAO, ASRS (former Vitreous Society), Retina Society, and Club Gules Gonin. He was ARVO Program Committee Member. He has received awards form AAO, ARVO and ASRS. Awarded with the AJO lecture presented at the XXIV Pan-American Congress of Ophthalmology, Puerto Rico 2003. He has published 78 papers and has 207 abstracts at international meetings. He has authored eight books and wrote15 book chapters.
